If you want to have a full look round the yard it is always better to call first as you will be sure that the yard owner is present and that they have the time to dedicate to showing you around.

However, it is useful to have a drive by before a visit to give you a feel for the location, and unannounced second and third visits would allow you to gauge if your initial reaction to the yard was correct.
